AGV Pista GP RR Performance

The AGV Pista GP RR racing helmet is the closest anyone can get to a MotoGP level helmet. Successor to the already incredibly popular AGV Pista GP R, the AGV Pista GPRR Helmet offers some slight improvements to bring the helmet back to the cutting edge of racing technology. Though there are not very many differences between the two helmets, the aerodynamics and liner of the GP RR have been significantly changed.

This full race motorcycle helmet is the helmet of choice of Moto GP rider Valentino Rossi, whose designs feature prominently in the GP RR range.

Though the helmet comes with a large price tag, the AGV Pista GP R R is the best of the best, featuring the best comfort and racing features AGV can produce. Since this is AGV’s best available helmet, it will also be competing with the Shoei X-Spirit 3, Arai RX-7V, Shark Race-R Pro GP, HJC RPHA 11, and the X-Lite X-803 RS Ultra Carbon.

However, based on our Road Test of these helmets, only the Shoei X-Spirit III (Marc Marquez’s helmet) has been able to give the AGV a run for its money in terms of quality, safety, and aerodynamics.

Shell

The outer shell of the AGV PistaGP RR is fully composed of lightweight carbon fiber. In a size S, the the GPRR only comes in at about 1450 grams. The race helmet is produced in 4 outer shell sizes, which will make sure that the best motorcycle helmet will give you the best fit.

The AGV Pista GP RR is ECE 22.05 certified. Though the Pista GP RR hasn’t been rated by SHARP yet, the AGV Pista GP R has been and it received 5/5 stars. Lastly, the AVG Pista GP RR is FIM racing homologated, which is one of the newest helmet standards, which is also a mandatory certification for MotoGP. This is a great certification to have since the FIM racing homologation standards also ensure the helmet will minimize rotational accelerations per FIM guidelines.

Ventilation

The ventilation on the AGV Pista GP RR has remained relatively unchanged from the Pista GPR. This means the helmet still uses AGV’s powerful IVS (integrated ventilation system) ventilation with 5 large front metal air vents and 2 rear extractors hollowed in the shell.

The 2 chin vents can be adjusted with a lever inside of the chin bar, and the internal chin channels distribute the airflow onto the visor. There are 3 additional brow vents that are covered in metal mesh and can be shut with rubber stoppers. Lastly, warm air will then leave the helmet through 2 additional air outlets near the spoiler.

To ensure maximum performance, AGV have made sure to test the sports helmet in a wind tunnel to make it as high ventilating and aerodynamic as possible.

Visor

Out of the box, the AGV Pista G P R R uses an Optical Class 1 AGV Race 3 visor, which has been anti-fog Pinlock prepared with the insert lens in the box. It has been positioned to provide a wide horizontal and vertical field of view so that you can focus on your racing. To help out on the track, the visor also includes tear off pins.

The visor’s patented visor lock system (VLS) reduces the chances of the visor accidentally opening. The visor also features an exclusive metal visor mechanism for quick visor changes.

Liner

The comfort liner of the AGV Pista GP RR carbon helmet features the most significant changes compared to the AGV Pista GP R. The liner includes MotoGP developed removable and washable interior padding. The cheek pads are made of Shalimar and microfiber in the comfort liner. They have been further treated to be moisture wicking and antibacterial.

To further distinguish itself, the Pista GP RR is prepared with a hydration system out of the box that you can easily attach to a water bag. The helmet also includes AGV’s 360-Degree Adaptive Fit, which means the liner is adjustable and you can adjust it to give you the most comfortable fit.

Lastly, for added safety, the helmet includes emergency quick release cheek pads, it uses a titanium double-D ring chin strap, and it includes ear plugs in the box for ear protection.

AGV Pista GP RR Essenza 46

AGV Pista GP RR Essenza 46

The AGV Pista GP RR. This helmet serves as a replacement to the AGV Pista GP R, and as the name suggests, there aren’t too many changes. Instead we get a refinement of AGV’s top racing helmet and with the RR, you get the latest replicas from the Moto GP worn by riders such as Valentino Rossi. The big question is the recommended retail price though and the Pista RR starts at 1250 Euro or just under 1400 USD. So it is pretty much inline with the older Pista GP R and of course, this helmet represents the best of the best.

Shell

As always, we start off with the shell of the Pista GP RR and it has been made out of 100% carbon fiber. That gives us a very light weight of about 1450 grams in the size S. The shell is also available in 4 different sizes on the Pista GP RR. We don’t yet have a SHARP rating, though it will most likely be 5 stars like the previous version. There is the new FIM homologation though and this is a certification against impact, penetration and rotational force. Plus this is required for MotoGP Helmets now.

Ventilation

Ventilation is pretty much untouched and we have the same, robust system as before. The chin scoops are opened and closed via a slider on the inside of the helmet by your chin. The top 3 vents are ringed by metal and can only be opened or closed by using stoppers. All in all, this pushes a lot air though the helmet and it gets pulled out of the 2 mini spoiler exhausts. The helmet has of course been designed in a wind tunnel, as you can probably see with the sleek profile and at the back, the spoiler is the detachable Pro spoiler.

Visor

Center, front we have the optical class 1 visor. It is a pinlock anti fog lens prepared visor, and the pinlock comes with the helmet. It is also prepared with tear off pins and those are also supplied with the helmet. The visor itself gives a very wide and deep field of view, the widest in the market. The visor is very easy to replace and can be viewed in our AGV Pista GP RR Video Review.

Interior

Underneath the helmet, there are a few things to mention. The hydration system is a big hose running along the outside and you can hook this up to your water bag and drink while racing. Then there is an Emergency Quick Release System with this helmet. The cheek pads are made out of Shalimar the head liner is microfiber. These are designed to keep you cool and have also been antibacterially treated. The helmet comes with the 360 degree adaptive fit and adjustable head liner so that you can customize the fit to what is best for you. This is one of the improvements compared to the original Pista GP R. Quality is of course top notch and everything is as it should be underneath.

Others

For the rest, the AGV Pista GP RR come with titanium Double-D rings, which reduce on weight but will keep you solidly in your helmet. Seeing as this is a race helmet without much noise isolation, AGV have supplied a couple ear plugs as well, which are highly recommended.

Competitors

The AGV Pista GP RR is specialized for racing that it is quite unique. However there are some very good high-end racing helmets. Probably the best known is the Shoei X-Spirit3 which is multi-time motoGP World Champion Marc Marquez’s helmet. Other good alternatives to the AGV Pista GP R are the Arai RX-7V, the HJC RPHA11, the Shark Race-R Pro GP and the X-lite X-803 Ultra Carbon. All these helmets are high-end racing helmets with a heavy focus on track riding. Made for riders that require the absolute best when it comes to racing equipment.
